Overview

The primary mission for the Principal Engineer is to be a Subject Matter Expert in their field as well an external face of the Kinney group at conferences, round tables and other industry events. This position’s specialty is IT Operations Analytics – specifically the Splunk Platform and its associated premium applications - but can span the broader product ecosystem where Kinney Group is a partner, to include storage, virtualization, networking and cloud principles.

 

The Duties of the Principal Engineer include but are not limited to:

  • Team Membership
    • Provide Technical leadership to the engineering organization as a mentor and Solution Architect
    • Collaborate with line management regarding personal development & training requirements
  • Technology Expertise
    • Understand the capabilities of the technologies for which they are a Subject Matter Expert
    • Understand our partners and competitor’s roadmaps and present new and interesting capabilities to Engineering leadership for inclusion in the product & service roadmap.
    • Understand how the Kinney Group and our customers can leverage these new technologies in alignment with industry trends.
    • Collaborate with Partners and Customers on product and solutions based reference architectures that match both best practices and where the technology is headed
    • Broad systems and technology expertise including demonstrable expertise in troubleshooting complex issues.
  • Understand the technologies used within our customers to identify new business opportunities within existing customers and work with Business Development to bring these opportunities to light.
  • Work with Business Development on new industry verticals to pursue, in tandem with our partners.
  • Provide solution design, technical leadership and define the scope for customer engagements.
  • Collaborate with marketing & sales teams to identify the requirements for sales & demo materials and work with engineering leadership to prioritize and deliver these capabilities
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership to develop and enhance company development and process standards and, where required, perform quality verification of other colleagues’ work products.
  • Excellent written, verbal & presentation skills required to present to internal, external and industry stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities

Desired Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years of progressive industry expertise
  • Expertise with the installation, configuration & trouble shooting splunk, its core and premium applications in a variety of customer environments.
  • Expertise in the onboarding of customer data in a wide variety of formats.
  • Expertise in the development of custom solutions solving unique customer problems on the splunk platform.
  • Senior Certification(s) as applicable for the field (CCIE / CISSP / Splunk consultant 2)
  • Virtualization: Understand and work with customers and Hypervisor vendors to optimize for Big Data Analytics workloads. Specifically, deep experience with VMware’s suite of products.
  • Storage: Understand and work with customers and storage vendors to optimize for Big Data Analytics workloads. Vendors such as NetApp, Pure Storage, Hitachi (HDS), EMC or other Tier 1 Storage
  • Server Platforms: Understand and work with customers and compute vendors to optimize platforms such as HP, Dell, IBM, Cisco UCS or equivalent.
  • Understanding of ITIL Process Tools: Service Desk, Change Management, Incident Management

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Previous hands-on expertise with two or more of the following hardware and software platforms: NetApp, HDS, EMC, Cisco, Cisco USC, Splunk, App Dynamics, KVM, Citrix, LiquidWare Labs, Netbackup (or equivalent), SAN-based replication and DR technologies.
  • Operational experience with relational database (SQL/Oracle connectivity and configuration) and security principles (host and network hardening)
  • Prior experience working with Agile development methodologies. Scrum experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with a software configuration management system (subversion, git, hub, cvs, etc)
